Readers may voice an opinion of “support” or “dissent” for articles. Voting enters readers into a lottery for invitation to a monthly Citizen Speaks event. Here, diverse reader groups discuss trending topics and each group nominates one attendee to write a guest column.

Event invitations are delivered via SMS and a Citizen Pass reflects site and event activity.

A service blueprint maps reader and newspaper staff interactions in all phases of the service including mobile and web activity, Citizen Speaks event, and printed edition.

Citizen Speaks is service layer for the Post Gazette that invites readers to speak up online, in person, and in print to engage in new ways of experiencing and sharing news. Research showed that students tend to overlook print and local sources and often view their time in Pittsburgh as a “layover.” However, they place high importance on sharing news and express nostalgia for dinner table conversations and other past rituals. Citizen Speaks provides present and future value for students as well as a sustainable model for the Post Gazette. Readers express opinions through an online feedback channel, discuss trending topics at monthly events, and may write guest columns. A Citizen Pass tracks activity and logs credentials, allowing for growth, reflection, validation, and greater involvement.
